The following gives an overview of the method used to calculate the MiCA
indicators related to GHG emissions as well as the related data sources
used in the CCRI API.
- 🏭 Scope 1 - Controlled
- 🔌 Scope 2 – Purchased
- 💳 GHG intensity
| S.12 | 🏭 |
|---|
| Metric definition | Scope 1 GHG emissions for the validation of transactions and the maintenance of the integrity of the distributed ledger of transactions |
| Method | Calculation based on the energy consumption of the energy production controlled by miners (for PoW) / node operators (for PoS) and the GHG emissions related to this energy production. In case of missing or insufficient information on whether miners or node operators control the energy production, we assume that the electricity was purchased and the associated GHG emissions are counted towards scope 2 |
| Sources | See Currencies and Sources for the sources of input data per currency |
| S.13 | 🔌 |
|---|
| Metric definition | Scope 2 GHG emissions for the validation of transactions and the maintenance of the integrity of the distributed ledger of transactions |
| Method | Calculation based on the locations of miners (for PoW) / node operators (for PoS) and country- or region-level emission factors |
| Sources | See Currencies and Sources for the sources of input data per currency. We use emission factors from the Environmental Protection Agency for the U.S. and U.S. states, from the Government of Canada for Canada and Canadian provinces, from the European Environment Agency for European countries, and derive emission factors for further countries based on electricity production and CO2 emission by sector data from the International Energy Agency. |
| S.14 | 💳 |
|---|
| Metric definition | Average GHG emissions (scope 1 and scope 2) per validated transaction |
| Method | Calculation based on the total GHG emissions and the hybrid allocation approach |
| Sources | See Currencies and Sources for the sources of input data per currency |
