Currencies and Sources
Crypto-assets are at the heart of the CCRI API. This page shows which cryptocurrencies and tokens are currently supported and what asset-specific data sources we leverage for each — the general calculation approach, including input values required across all crypto-assets (e.g., country-level renewable energy shares), is detailed in Methodology.
If data availability or technical constraints prevent the application of the standard approach for a given asset, we resort to reference values derived from a basket of selected peers from the Top 20 crypto-assets by market capitalization, which typically offer higher data availability. These reference values are scaled according to the market capitalization of the crypto-asset, using data from Coingecko. If this approach is taken, all MiCA sustainability indicators can be deemed as estimated. We will replace and update the proxy input values on an ongoing basis if availability allows. For tokens operating across multiple chains — where many contribute minimally to overall environmental impact and offer limited data availability — we prioritize the most relevant base layers. Coverage of additional base layers will be expanded progressively as more data becomes accessible. The MiCA-specific approach is further detailed in CCRI's MiCA methodology whitepaper.
Ethereum has switched its consensus mechanism from PoW to PoS. In our API, ETH refers to Ethereum (PoW) and is available until 15 September 2022. ETH2 refers to Ethereum (PoS) and starts from 16 September 2022.
