MiCA Indicators

The sustainability indicators that crypto-asset service providers and issuers have to disclose under MiCA are specified in Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2025/422 of 17 December 2024, published in the Official Journal on 31 March 2025. Its annex defines the indicators as numbered fields (S.1 – S.36) in three tables:

  • Table 2 – mandatory: general information and the mandatory key indicator on energy consumption (S.8).
  • Table 3 – supplementary: key indicators on energy and GHG emissions (S.10 – S.14), required depending on the entity in scope and the annual energy consumption of the crypto-asset.
  • Table 4 – optional: further indicators, among them waste production (S.22 – S.24) and the impact of the use of equipment on natural resources (S.29).

Which table applies when is explained on MiCA Art. 66(5) – Sustainability Disclosure. The pages below refer to each indicator by its field number.

This section provides an overview of the general methodology and the input data used across all assets. Currencies and Sources provides details on the asset-specific input data and underlying assumptions. CCRI's MiCA methodology whitepaper provides a detailed description of the methodology and the underlying assumptions.

info

The CCRI API provides daily updates of all mandatory and supplementary MiCA sustainability indicators, based on a rolling average over the last 14 days to smooth out stark outliers. For MiCA sustainability indicators that should be reported on an annualized basis (i.e., energy consumption or GHG emissions per year), the daily values of the respective sustainability indicators are multiplied by 365 days. This approach is often used to highlight the up-to-date electricity consumption or GHG emissions in the context of a year, similar to Cambridge's Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index.

  • Energy — energy consumption (S.8), renewable energy consumption (S.10), and energy intensity (S.11).
  • GHG emissions — Scope 1 (S.12), Scope 2 (S.13), and GHG intensity (S.14).
